If I was the Boss

Just the thought of being my own Boss makes me giddy. We all want our business to be financially successful as well as know in the industry, and to be liked by our staff. I think as a Boss there are certain rules and regulations that are vital in the workplace. It is like the saying goes, 'You give them your hand and they will take you entire arm.'

I would definitely hire people on their credentials and not on race. Who cares if you are pink, purple or blue! It is your experience and expertise that will get you a job in my company.

A normal working day would be from 09h00- 16h00 and Friday's will be from 09h00-12h00. Don't get me wrong, I expect 110% effort from all of my staff members. Friday's will also be casual day and no meetings will be scheduled for this day either.

Quarterly staff lunches and team building sessions will be held so that management and staff may get to know each other outside of the working environment.

On your birthday you will be entitled to a day off provided that all deadlines have been met. A big fuss will be made on your birthday and cake will definitely be made provision for. I have to spoil my staff every-once-in-a-while.

Each staff member will have a fully equipped work station so that they have access to all the necessary tools in order for them to perform at their best.
Facebook will only be accessible from 09h00-10h00 and from 15h00-16h00.

I would try and make sure that everything runs according to a work schedule. There will be definitely no room for leaving things to the last minute!
Weekly meetings will be held to check staff progress and to make sure that everyone is on par.
I would make sure that my employees are constantly challenged in the work that they do, which equals more profits and most importantly, that my staff are happy in their positions.

Staff members will also be recieve a R50.00 meal allowance when they work overtime. They will also be reembursed for petrol when attending work related meetings, funtions or running errants.

Trying to implement these rules and regualtions is probably easier said than done. The only thing that I would except from my staff is deadication and hard work, which is my recipe for success.

Things that just blatantly irritate me about other people...

The list is endless but here is a few that really gets my blood boiling:

1. People who litter and do not think twice about it. Please just throw your rubbish in the bin; it’s the least you can do to help save the environment.

2. When people leave things to the last minute and cannot fathom why things go wrong prior to a deadline- It’s called Murphy’s Law, duh!

3. Having someone tell you the same story more than once in the same day. Gosh, don’t people take note of what they are saying anymore, or is it because they just want to hear their own voices?

4. This is a good one, people who complain that they never have money but can’t make an effort to get a job. Where’s the sense in that? Get yourself a job for crying out loud!

5. I find this one extremely revolting and annoying, when people constantly sniff. Here’s a tissue, please blow your nose!

6. Picture this scenario, you are standing in a long queue in the supermarket and you finally reach the till. You greet the cashier and start unpacking your items. Before you know it the cashier is discussing her plans for the weekend with her friend. HELLO, EXCUSE ME!!! Have you not heard of customer service? Management is definitely going to hear about this! I really despise bad customer service.

7. People who poke their noses in other people’s business. If it has nothing to do with you then don’t get involved. Don’t these people have better things to do with their time?

8. I really don’t understand how women can have so many children when they can barley look after themselves. Don’t they want the best for their families emotionally and financially?

9. People who constantly ask you for favours but when you need a favour then they have 101 excuses as to why they can’t help you out. Thanks for the heads-up but don’t forget that what goes around comes around.

10. And last but not least, teenagers who play music aloud on their cellphones for the entire world to hear. I seriously don’t want to hear you gangster music, if I did I would have asked. Have you ever heard of earphones? I guess not!

Two people came out of a building and into a story...

Angela, a 23 year old, assistant at one of New York's finest women magazines, finds herself at a dead end in her life. Work has become utterly frustrating and unchallenged, which is making Angela very unhappy.

"I have a degree in marketing and advertising but you think they'd notice, think they'd give me a little credit for it! I Guess not," expressed Angela to her colleague Katie. Katie and Angela have become really good friends in the past six months. Angela really cherishes their friendship- Katie seems to be the only one who truly understands her frustrations. "Don't worry Angie, you are destined for bigger and better things. See this job as a stepping stone in your career," Katie encouraged. "Well, see you in the morning all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed," joked Angela. And the two women went their separate ways.

Another boring and unchallenging day at the office, Angela thought to herself whilst taking the subway home. Angela enjoyed the subway as it gave her time to unwind and reflect on the day gone by, even though it was hardly a pleasant reflection. Angela constantly dreams for of becoming an editor-in-chief of a magazine- preferably her own- And finally being able to call the shots in her own life, where people play by her rules. "Phew... that dream better become a reality soon," Angela mumbled to herself.

Finally Angela arrived at her tiny one bedroom apartment, which she calls home. Exhausted from work Angela decided to plonk herself on her bed and watched her favourite television programme. Before Angela could change the channel she was fast asleep and was totally oblivious to her surroundings.

Suddenly the phone rings, startling Angela from her deep sleep. A ghost from her past has entered her life- her dad- who walked out on her and her family at the age of five.
Will Angela be able to cope with the stress of work and will she be able to reconcile with her dad?

Avatar- The greatest movie I have ever seen!

I cannot begin to explain the impact Avatar had on me but I will admit to crying- Yes i cried for Avatar! It really shows how self-centered human beings are, they will stop at nothing to get what they want and it do not seem to care who they trample over.

Human greed has become somewhat of a disease, infecting the minds of others and making them oblivious to what is real. Money does not make the world go round but nature does because without it we are nothing just dead corpses- literally. We are slowly but surely killing the environment by our ignorance and nonchalant attitude. What will it take for us to wake up and realise what we are doing to the planet? If we need more people to direct movies like Avatar, then I say go ahead and keep directing.

The future of the environment is in our hands and only we can do something about it before it is too late. We need to act now and act together, by making conscience decisions so that future generations may too benefit from the fruits of Mother Nature.

Designer PR

When walking into a designer label store one would expect quality items at a very high price. The same could apply to designer PR but at a much more affordable thanks to social media.

Companies expect good service and results but aren't always able to afford it but with the latest craze of social media it is now attainable. PRP's (public relations practitioners) have far more options, such as twitter, blogging, my space and facebook, when advertising and gaining publicity for clients- The possibilities are endless.

The internet has become a very important source for PRP's as building online reputation is the way for the future. Gone are the days where companies only used print media as a form of advertising, it's all about social media and if you don't get on the band-wagon now then you are surely going to be left behind.

Is polygamy a feminist issue?

Polygamy is a feminist issue as it infringes upon the rights of women and who they choose to marry.
In the 21st century polygamy has become more of an issue as to prior years because women now have more rights as apposed to back then. Before the feminist movement women were expected to get married and bare children, which evidently became their role in society, whilst men were able to get an education and go into the working world.

In polygamy communities, found in the United States of America, these women seldom have the freedom of choice when choosing a husband. During a documentary shown on the Oprah Winfrey show, it showed that girls born into polygamy communities did not have a choice in who they married. The only rights they were aware of were the ones made by the "leader" of the community. These females barely knew about the on-goings of the "outside" world and the rights that they have.

It still seems to baffle me as to why it is acceptable for men to have more that one wife, but it is unacceptable for women to have more than one husband. I believe that no man can love more than one woman- Is it not enough for a man to have just one woman? Women in polygamy marriages should be made aware of their rights and should be able to make their own decisions whether or not they want to stay in the marriage.
