Polygamy is a feminist issue as it infringes upon the rights of women and who they choose to marry.
In the 21st century polygamy has become more of an issue as to prior years because women now have more rights as apposed to back then. Before the feminist movement women were expected to get married and bare children, which evidently became their role in society, whilst men were able to get an education and go into the working world.
In polygamy communities, found in the United States of America, these women seldom have the freedom of choice when choosing a husband. During a documentary shown on the Oprah Winfrey show, it showed that girls born into polygamy communities did not have a choice in who they married. The only rights they were aware of were the ones made by the "leader" of the community. These females barely knew about the on-goings of the "outside" world and the rights that they have.
It still seems to baffle me as to why it is acceptable for men to have more that one wife, but it is unacceptable for women to have more than one husband. I believe that no man can love more than one woman- Is it not enough for a man to have just one woman? Women in polygamy marriages should be made aware of their rights and should be able to make their own decisions whether or not they want to stay in the marriage.

I fully agree with the views of Lynn’s article. I do believe that women’s rights should be respected and that they should be treated equally. I also feel that should we be put in the situation our feelings might be different.

No individual deserves to live a life of restriction, fear and not being able to voice their opinions. Men need to realise that their egos would be bruised if a women married more then one man and in reality this would be unacceptable. So why is polygamy acceptable even in the case of a public figure such as Jacob Zuma? It is a total disgrace to the citizens of South Africa.
ReplyDeleteEvery human has the right to make their own decisions when it comes to what they want in life. It is completely wrong that these young females don't have this right. Whatever rules apply to men should apply to women too and vice-versa.
