Gone are the days…

When we had very few responsibilities and decision making wasn’t left up to us
When we didn’t need to budget because mom and dad paid for everything
When learning and going to school was fun because you knew your friends would be there
When family outings were the highlight of your weekend and trips to the spur was the coolest thing since sliced bread
When all you wanted to do was play from sunrise to sunset and pretend to be anything your heart desired
When you could say anything that’s on your mind and not be judged just because you were a kid
When cartoon programmes like Gummy Bears and the Smurf would keep you entertained for hours
(I still like my cartoons though, there’s just no time for it)
When building sand castles were so amazing that you’d spend hours making it the biggest and prettiest sand castle you could possibly imagine

Where have all those good old days gone? How I wish to be a kid again, but I guess we all have to grow up sooner or later. It never killed anyone by reminiscing about your childhood.

Every day is a good day

As much as this statement is true today has not been a good day for me, actually it hasn’t been a good week. The flu has really hit me with full force but I should find the silver lining to this. I should be grateful that I have access to medical attention as many people do not have access to such a ‘luxury.’

What makes every day a good day is when someone you don’t know smiles at you and out of nowhere your mood suddenly lifts. At work customers really make my day when they ask how you are, just that little bit of acknowledgement and recognition goes a long way. Even receiving compliments can make every day a good day. So don’t be shy to dish out a few compliments every now and then.

Every day is a good day because we are very fortunate people to have a roof over our heads, food in our stomachs and families who care about us. There are many people out there that would give an arm and a leg just to have those things that we so often take for granted. We have all the tools at our finger tips to be the best we can be and we should utilise it to the best of our abilities.

Even though it may seem that things are falling apart and that life is just throwing us way too many curve balls we should remind ourselves that there are people that are worse off than us.
So let’s be thankful for what we have and make every day a good day.

What am I looking forward to?

This topic was given to my Media Studies group for publication called the Cape Town Magazine. As I was thinking of possible articles that could be written on this topic, I thought what am I looking forward to...

1) First and foremost I am looking to summer. Just the thought if those hot summer days and nights spent with loved ones gets me all giddy inside. Bye-bye winter and hello sunshine!

2) Next on my list definitely has to be the end of the year when tech closes. I can just smell the celebrations in the air- Hell, we deserve it!

3) Holiday time… Well I’m not too sure if I’ll have much of a holiday because I need to get back into the working world.

4) I’m really looking forward to going back to industry and giving up my weekend job. I’m even looking forward to doing the ‘dirty work.’ I know we all have to start somewhere. Oh and not forgetting the new challenges and opportunities that come with the job.

5) And last but not least, I’m looking forward to graduation next year. I know it won’t be the last graduation as I would like to continue studying, not necessarily public relations. It is really an achievement and an excellent pat on the back for a job well done.

Our greatest strengths are our greatest weakness

We become so dependent on our strengths instead of concentrating on other areas that might need improvement. One can even say that because it is the only strength we know which results in us becoming set in our ways. We close ourselves off to suggestions and change.

Generally we feel intimidated and threatened by people with equal strengths. We tend to forget that we can learn from their strengths and better our weaknesses. When we come across people that are weaker in our areas of strength, we tend to walk all over them. We should actually help these people grow and it will automatically help in bettering ourselves. It is like the saying goes, ‘we got to give a little in order to receive a little.’

I think the main idea is that we should not let our strengths control our lives, we should benefit from it and so should others. Our strengths are there to enhance our lives, if used correctly, it will not become our greatest weakness.

2010 Soccer World Cup hosted on African Soil!

Congratulations to South Africa for hosting the most memorable soccer world cup. Who would have thought that we would be able to pull off an event of world class stature?

Unfortunately the world cup has come and gone like the wind, whilst managing to leave a memorable legacy in the hearts and minds of both locals and foreigners.
I was very fortunate to attend and experience the world cup first hand (so-to-speak). No, I wasn’t involved in the planning but I attended the very first match in Cape Town- France vs. Uruguay. Wow! What an experience! The atmosphere and the camaraderie were out of this world. Everyone was united as football fanatics and neither race nor language was able to separate us. I have never seen Cape Town like that before not even on New Year ’s Eve. It felt like I was in a totally different country.

The most beautiful thing about the world cup was that it brought everyone together and we celebrated as a united front. I must admit that I had my doubts about South Africa hosting the world cup but none of that even matters now.
I hope that the success for the world cup has created a platform for many great things to come. It just shows that a little faith can go along way- VIVA SOUTH AFRICA!

Try a cliché

Well according to the Collins pocket dictionary a cliché is described as ‘an expression or idea that is no longer effective because of overuse.’ If it is an overused idea or expression then why do people still use clichés, surely there must be other analogies out there? Why not try a new saying or phrase? The possibilities with the English language are endless.

Many of us are very familiar with the phrases such as, before I knew it, without a doubt, in the nick of time, and the list goes on. Funny enough we use clichés on a daily basis and many of us don’t even realise it. Maybe life is like a cliché, going about doing and saying the same things everyday. Maybe we should try not to be cliché and be a bit more individualistic.
