The last lecture

It is the final curtain call… it is the last lecture for Btech Public Relations Management student 2010 at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.

It is time to say goodbye to all our lecturers who natured and continuously guided us throughout the course of our fourth year.
It is also time to say goodbye to the many friends that we have made and I sincerely with them the best of luck for their future endeavours.
They have taught us many life lessons and hope that we have learnt from it by taking it into the working world.
This is the last lecture…

Watch this space…

I am definitely going places to meet new people and discovery new treasures.

I am taking the world by storm with my degree in Public Relations Management.

I am working towards being a better person.

I am making things happen for myself and not selling myself short for anyone or anything.

You need to take me as I am because what you see is what you get.

I am intelligent, confident, trustworthy, responsible, independent, carefree, caring, compassionate and honest.

This is me;

So I advise you to watch this space and brace yourself for a ride of a lifetime because I am going places!

My favourite Cat in the Hat book is……………………; because….

Well as a child I never read any Cat in the Hat books, yep you read correctly- NEVER! This is my reasoning behind it; I found the black, red and white covers to be SO boring. I enjoyed colourful cover pages as it intrigued me to read the book. Don’t get me started on Dr Seuss; that weirdly shaped paws or hands, that sharp pointy nose, that wicked smile and beady eyes was more than enough to put me off. He simply freaked me out! He was supposed to be a cute-cuddly cat but no he had to be a freakishly scary one.

Even at the age of 21 I still haven’t read a Cat in the Hat book and I don’t think I ever will. If it’s any consolation I did what Horton Hears a Who and thoroughly enjoyed it. Must be because there were minimal cats involved- shiver.

Why I have conversations?

Quite frankly, I have conversations because I like the sound of my own voice. I also have conversations with myself, which I thoroughly enjoy. It keeps me sane even though some might argue that having conversations with yourself is a sign of insanity.

I like having conversations to get to know people. Conversations spark interest, which could lead to long term relationships. But with conversations come pain, joy, lies, pain and laughter. Sometimes you just have to take the good with the bad.

Conversations bring you closer to people; through that you learn to listen, to trust and to love. And what better way to learn those things by having conversations which doesn’t even cost a dime.

My big fat BIG dream

My big fat BIG dream is to be successful and happy
To be the best person I can be at all times
To be able to travel the world and see different places
To be able to take criticism and use it constructively
To be able to give to others in need and not be selfish
To put others needs before my own
To leave a mark in the working world and create a good name for myself
To be able to continue dreaming of the future and endless possibilities thereof
My advice to all is, dream you big fat BIG dream- you either dream big or you don’t dream at all

Conventional is like a fullback position isn’t it?

I think there are two sides to this coin. But let us break this statement down a bit.
Conventional means following accepted customs, behaviour and principles.
A fullback position means to play in a defending position.
So does this mean that conventional people have to constantly justify their ways or beliefs? Well, I guess it does, but why question the norm if that is the only thing you know. In media studies our lecturer has taught us to question the conventional and open our minds to the unconventional.
But I still feel that even if you are conventional or unconventional you still need to play a fullback position. We should question the known and the unknown.
We all have to constantly justify our actions whether it is conventional or unconventional.

You cannot chase two rabbits at the same time...

I guess this is something similar to multitasking...
I believe you can multitask, it’s just switching between doing different things at the same time. It’s like doing the washing, cleaning the house and making dinner. But not everyone is designed to ‘chase two rabbits at the same time.’ Multitasking is like a skill, you either have it or you don’t.
Multitasking is not always a good thing as it may result in doing things half instead of doing it right the first time. This could waste a lot of time, money and energy.

So the next time you consider ‘chasing two rabbits at the same time,’ think about doing things right the first time around.

“Nothing is more dangerous than an idea, when you only have one idea.” (Alain)

What if the one idea that you think is so brilliant falls through? You have no other back up ideas or plans.
As we are trained to be strategic thinkers and planners, we should always more than one idea- Plan A, B and C if needs be. It’s just to cover our backs and plan for the future because things can happen unexpectedly. This is just like forecasting, studying the environment and seeing what trends are making the markets buzz. With a constant changing environment it is important to have more than one idea. Only danger can arise when you only have one idea- why have one idea when you can have more?

Welcoming change...

Every once in a while there comes a time in our lives that we need to close one chapter and start another. This is just part of life whether you like change or not. Change can come in many different forms such as starting a new job, doing something for the first time or even something silly like changing your daily routine.

Change does with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. It challenges you to strive for the best and you a more versatile person, making it easy to adapt to different environments or situations. Welcoming change might be daunting at first but once you are settled and comfortable it’s really easy sailing from there onwards.

Without change life will be boring and stagnant. We will never go forward and learn to accept change for what it is.
Change is inevitable and the sooner we realise it, the sooner we can embrace it.

How hard is it to follow instructions?

For some people it is very hard for them to follow instructions. They simply prefer to do things their own way and later realise that instructions are there for a reason.

It is very easy not to follow instructions; you just don’t read it properly or you don’t read it at all.
A perfect example is when you receive a new cell phone. Many of use toss the instruction manual aside and opt to figure things out for ourselves. But we often go back to the instruction manual when we need more clarity.
We just need to take the time to read, understand and implement any instructions that we come across.

Andy Warhol said, “In the future everybody will be world famous for fifteen minutes.” You can’t choose the 15 minutes but why would you be world famous?

I would be world famous for a numerous things such as,

1) Breaking the Two Oceans marathon record- Gotta start training now already.

2) Making the best, mouth watering, lemon meringue pie the world has ever tasted.

3) Being on the Oprah show for making the best lemon meringue pie in the world.

4) Singing karaoke, posting it on YouTube and receiving millions of hits.

5) Finding a cure for cancer and HIV/AIDS.

6) Being the next president of South Africa- we need some female power in this country.

7) Planting millions of trees to eliminate greenhouses gases for good.

Out grown it...

After five months of no clubbing, I decided to go back just to see if I still belonged in the ‘clubbing scene.’ And to my surprise I didn’t. The crowd seems to get younger and younger, as I’m getting older. I didn’t even want to dress up- most girls usually find any excuse to get all dolled-up.

I would rather choose a ‘chill vibe’ at a friends’ place over clubbing any day, it just doesn’t interest me anymore. I had my fair share of crazy party days and terrible hangovers. Normally it would take me a couple of hours to recover but now it takes me 1 or 2 days- must be the old age. I can’t seem to take those late nights either they seem to catch up with me so quickly.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m always keen to have a good time but I definitely out grown clubbing.
